In civil law cases or in family law cases, both sides can benefit from having a trained neutral third party to listen to their side and to that of their opponent, helping both work out a settlement reasonable to both sides.
Mediation is informal, confidential, and conveniently scheduled to accommodate all participants. Mediation allows you to make the decisions in a more cost-effective alternative than filing a lawsuit. In this more informal atmosphere, the mediator can help you reach a positive agreement that is more customized to your individual needs than an order that you might receive from a judge. This may be why many mediated settlements last longer than those resulting from a judicial ruling.
